NHTSA: 2012 Volvo S60 earns five-star rating

ccording to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the 2012 Volvo S60 managed to earn a total of five stars in the combined crash score, even if the feds adopted more stringent guidelines and rigorous testing practices just last year, making it harder for cars to earn the five-star rating. The NHTSA said that the “new” Volvo S60 managed to earn five stars in frontal, rollover, side barrier and side pole crashes, becoming the eighth vehicle to be awarded with the NHTSA top rating for the 2012 model year.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that the other 2012 models so earn the five-star rating are the Volkswagen Passat, Toyota Camry, Saab 9-4X, Chevrolet Sonic, Chevrolet Camaro, Cadillac SRX and Cadillac CTS. 74 vehicles were tested by the NHTSA for the 2012 model year, including 22 SUVs, eight pickup trucks and two minivans.

As a reminder, the second generation of the Volvo S60 has been in production since 2010, and it’s coming with a choice of seven engines, starting with the 1.6L T3 petrol turbo unit and ending with the 2.4 liter D5 turbodiesel. The Volvo S60 is 182.2 inches long, 73.4 inches wide and 58.4 inches high, with a wheelbase of 109.3 inches.

2011 Tata Safari

Although you’ve probably never heard of the Tata Safari, it’s a pretty big seller in other parts of the world. For 2011, there is a new model, although it still appears to be stuck in 1999. It will go on sale in India in the early part of 2011, followed by Europe later in the year.

The new model will pick up where the old one left off, but with more technical updates, a new design, and more attention to fit and finish. This means that the price will rise, but Tata is debating on continuing the production of the previous model, as a low cost variant. Hard to imagine BMW doing that with one of their models isn’t it?

The 2011 Tata Safari SUV will be based on its sibling Aria’s platform which will make the car more rigid and a better handler. The new model will also have lots of space and will be loaded with features such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a silver finish on the center console, Climate Control, and much more.

Tata will also use some of the technical know how from Jaguar Land Rover on the new Safari to help sales in Europe. The motor should be 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel with 140 horsepower.

2012 Buick Regal GS – Photos and Info

The 2012 Buick Regal GS is powered by a 2.0-liter in-line 4 cylinder turbocharged engine. This delivers 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The transmission fitted on this car is a 6-speed manual that connects the power to the front-wheel drive.

The time to 60 is 6.7 seconds, which is definitely not bad for a vehicle in this class. Although it weighs a little over 3700 lbs (quite a lot, I might add), the Buick Regal GS proves to be athletic and quick.

There are 3 passenger’s seats in the back. The buyer can only get a black interior, a characteristic that isn’t that attractive in this car.

The fuel consumption is quite disappointing, standing at 19 mpg in the city and 27 on the highway.

Apparently, this is a “driver’s car”, which means that the purchase of the Buick Regal GS requires extensive research and test-drives – the type of car that resembles Audi’s A4, or BMW’s 3-Series.

Audi A1 Quattro – Photos and Info

The Audi A1 Quattro will be the first ever A1 to have an all-wheel drive. This car will be presented at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show.

Audi has already released information about the design, the engine and the performance. Apparently the Audi A1 Quattro will be powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine, which is capable of producing 253 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. This power enables the car to reach 60 in 5.5 seconds and hit a top speed of 154 mph. The fuel consumption is also relatively decent, at 28 mpg.

The A1 Quattro features Audi torque vectoring system that allows up to 100 percent of the torque to be sent to the rear wheels, in case it is necessary.

Basically, the drivetrain of this car is the one of the much larger S3, with some tweaks. The transmission, though, will not come in an automatic version (apparently the DSG wouldn’t fit), and that’s why the A1 Quattro gets a six-speed manual.

This car will go on sale in the summer of 2012 with a base price of $63,000, which is a little high, but it’s what you would expect from an Audi. This price is very likely to be worth it, if we were to judge by previous cars made by this German car manufacturer.
